Ghazala Hashmi is the 43rd Lieutenant Governor of Virginia, sworn in on January 17, 2026. Born in Hyderabad, India, and raised in the United States, she earned an undergraduate degree from Georgia Southern University and a Ph.D. in American Literature from Emory University, then spent decades teaching at Virginia community colleges. First elected to the Virginia State Senate for the 15th District in 2019, she served there until becoming Lieutenant Governor. Her office describes her as the first Muslim woman elected statewide in the nation and the first South Asian American elected to statewide office in Virginia.
